“What the hell is that?” I said in a cracked voice.
I had just realized I had not spoken out loud for days. Maybe weeks. Space can be lonely.
I had landed on Thezaria not fifteen minutes ago and had made my way to the edge of a forest of trees that looked like straws topped with gobs of marmalade. There was a breathable atmosphere but I decided to play it safe and keep my helmet on. Who knows what spores and other things might be floating around in the air. It wasn’t the tiny things I couldn’t see that was worrying me at the moment. It was the eight meter high creature staring at me from the tree line. It was a blueish green quadruped with what looked like feathers on its torso. It had plates covering the back of it and what looked like rivets covering what I assumed was natural armour. This creature had three horns. Two above the glowing red eyes and one enormous one that was jutting out from its back as if it was an extension of the spine. A maw of teeth was dripping on the plants far below its giant head. I slowly unholstered my weapon. How could something so big be standing so still? My ship was about thirty meters behind me on open terrain. I had no cover and to run back to the ship was a race I would most certainly lose. I was going to have to try and kill this thing or it was going to eat me. Slowly now. Just start backing away. Maybe it will just lose interest and go find dinner elsewhere. Slowly now. Not too much noise. Its jaws were still salivating. I was so frightened my weapon was shaking in my hand. This was not worth the units. No resource or priceless artifact was going to buy my way out of being this monster’s lunch. Then it happened. A rock gave way under foot and I fell to the ground. The creature made a sound that will haunt my nightmares for ever. It reared back and lunged into a charge. I got to my feet and fired a shot that ricocheted off the creature’s back. I was screwed. I started running. I hadn’t noticed a small crest in the terrain before. I could hear the sound of the beast bounding closer. This was my only chance. I dropped down from the outcrop out of sight. I pointed my weapon to the purple sky above. The creature appeared as it soared over the crest. I fired my weapon as fast I could. In a flash of plasma I was covered in entrails and green blood. My blasts had blown a meter sized hole in the belly of the beast. It lay there smouldering. I was so stunned that I was still alive I almost didn’t notice that my warning light was on. I had killed this thing. That’s against the rules but it was either it or me. Something was sticking into the side of my leg. I reached down and pulled it out of the ground. An artifact! Units!
“Looks like this trip was worth it after all.” I said aloud in a cracked voice. It was the second time I had spoken today.
Time to go. Sentinels will be coming. I got up and started for my ship. I looked behind me at the corpse I was leaving behind. I think I’ll call you “Triocerous”.
The Adventure is Real
In June we will be having adventure’s like these and we will each experience our own story to tell. No matter how you choose to spend your time in No Man’s Sky, it is assured that no one will keep out of harm’s way for long. It could be getting shot at by pirates and raiders, or maybe stepped on by a creature the size of a building. Perhaps you might be gunned down by the sentinels? One thing is certain though, you are going to need units. Lots of units.
